Post Prog Sopho
ROBOTMONKEYARM deliver a mostly instrumental garage rock and cinematic triplet of EP’s , with wacky artwork and a fusion aura. But there is more than that.
When you start listening on “part one...robot senza nome!” you get a taste of what follows, with the Tarantino style surf rock along with a space twist on “L’Automa” and the Rodriguez style soundtrack on “Il Bruto”. “La Bella” is an interesting mellow and dreamy intermission that leads to “Titolli”, a Morricone tribute with an imposing pipe organ. Actually there is quite a parade of instruments on this one (Sax, clarinet, etc), surely the most captivating moment of a really interesting EP.
On “Part two...cinema vomitif & the white mask of doom!”, as the name implies, things get more jazzy. “Cinema Vomitif” is a symphonic uptempo composition, a proper soundtrack of an action movie. Surf rock comes back on “Kill The Cutie” with the baritone guitar leading the dance! “Deliria” is an eclectic moment with its haunting vocals, a demonstration of the band’s avant garde potentials. I would like to hear more on this style from them in the future. “Vengeance of the sweater girl” is another beach rock moment, with lots of keys and more.
“Part 3...in memoriam to those we've lost and those we don’t remember” starts from where part 2 finishes. More 60’s rock, punk style vocals are present on “The Psychogenic Stomp!”, The psychedelic surf delirium ends on “Dance Party Ending” and leads to “L’Epilogo” a real symphonic treatment, another prog track and another parade of instruments. An ambient passage of piano that leads to relaxing sea waves is the way this trilogy ends with “APOΕε4”.
I don’t know what sound they will choose on their future releases, but Robotmonkeyarm prove with these 3 EPs, their large set of instruments and their prog moments that they are more than just a cinematic tribute band. Especially, if you are a fusion and movies freak, these 3 releases will get stuck on your music player!
