‘Visions from Realities’ is an ambitious album created by Italian progster Umberto Pagnini. According to his statement on the band’s website, he strives for creative music collaboration and would like to achieve this with ACTIVE HEED.
A beautiful artwork introduces us to the more innocent world of Roger Dean covers and fairytales. Musically speaking, what comes to mind is 80s YES.
The album consists of 15 tracks, some really short in duration. For example, there are 7 pieces from one and a half to 3 minutes long. The advantage of this is no tune overstays its welcome, however some are that good that they leave us begging for more.
The music is well played and well produced. There is some wonderful acoustic guitar all through the album. The keyboards shine – at times some quirky melodies set the scene to the music.
Singer Pellek from DAMNATION ANGELS is passionate and convincing enough although at times monotonous. More variety would be advised. For example, on piece ‘Usual plays in Heaven – Be Kind and Talk to Me’, Norwegian singer Marit Børresen adds some female vocals, which is a welcome change. More parts with female vocals would certainly make a difference.
Most music is overly optimistic, with lots of happiness and joy pouring out from every melody. In that sense, more mainstream fans will appreciate this music the most. Open minded progsters will need to make an effort with this one, as the overall direction is more commercial. However, throughout the album there are tasty bits of prog for everyone to enjoy.
To sum up, lots of effort and love has been put into this album. Check the youtube video to see if you will find it matches your taste. If that is the case, be prepared to taste Visions from a Different Reality!
