Il Rumore Bianco (White Noise) is a new Italian band coming from Verona, and last year they released their first work named ‘Mediocrazia’. I’m not sure how to name this release though. Is it an album or an EP (Extended Play)? Because with a total running time under 30 minutes it is rather short for an album and long for an EP!
But let’s leave this behind and let’s concentrate on the really interesting part, which is the music. ‘Mediocrazia’ consists of 4 songs and all of them have something to offer the listener.
These guys surely know how to play their instruments to begin with. They play a very tight and well performed Progressive Rock, which although gives the impression that it follows the path of the great bands of the ‘70’s, they achieve to sound rather fresh. Their music seems to be influenced by older bands but for me that’s not a problem at all. Quite the opposite I would say. There are some music lines and passages from time to time which paint a smile on my face because they remind me bands like King Crimson, or Van Der Graaf Generator for example. (Especially the last song Tutto Un Sogno Part.2, it reminds me of Van Der Graaf Generator a lot).
The only problem (for me) is the language. Not that I don’t like Italian! I believe Italian is a very musical and beautiful language to be honest. But when I listen to a song I always pay attention to the lyrics as well. (They are a part of the song after all, right?). But in this case I can’t, because I simply don’t know Italian. So my only option was to concentrate on their music. And their music is very good! It embodies very interesting and rather complex compositions on most occasions, which you appreciate more and more after a few times you listen.
Il Rumore Bianco had a very good start, and let’s hope they will continue like that, if not better. I would surely recommend them to all the fans of Progressive Rock.
