BIG BIG TRAIN - English electric (Part 1) (2012, UK)

NYL - Nyl (1976, France)

Apostolis "Retromaniac" Psarros

NYLAfter the demise of Cheval Fou guitarist Michel Peteau along with drummer Stéphane Rossini moved on to form a new group under the name Nyl. The band produced one sole release on Urus Records before fading into obscurity for good. The album features some important guest musicians in differrent tracks, like bassist Jannick Top of Magma fame or ex-Ame Son Patrick Fontaine and Bernard Lavialle on bass and guitars respectively. The same album with plenty of unpublished recordings was released on Legend in 1994 and more recently on Psych Up Melodies.

CHEVAL FOU - Cheval fou (1970-1975, r. 1994, France)

Apostolis "Retromaniac" Psarros

Cheval fouObscure French Psychedelic Rock band, which existed between early- and mid-70's. Cheval Fou reputedly hailed from Paris and were fronted by brothers Jean-Max and Michel Peteau (both guitarists and singers) along with drummer Stephane Rossini. While the band had recorded several tracks around the time of its existence, none of these actually saw the light until 1994, when a collection of tracks was released in CD format on the French label Legend. The same album was re-released more recently by Fabrizio Di Vicino's Psych Up Melodies.

DISTORTED HARMONY - Utopia (2012, Israel)

Thanos Patsos

Distorted HarmonyI have been taken completely by surprise with Distorted Harmony's ''Utopia''. It is one of these rare cases when a new band comes up with a mature sound and debut album, effectively filtering a very broad range of influences and also adding their personal character to produce something far from the "acceptable" and "typical".

TRIOSCAPES - Separate realities (2012, U.S.A.)

Thanos Patsos

trioscapesHeavy, heavy, heavy fusion...

I was not surprised when this band was proposed for an addition to progressive metal; everything else is there, apart from the guitars! The trio of Briggs, Lynch and Fancourt deliver lessons on heavy progressive fusion based on a solid rhythm section and a talented saxophonist.

AFFECTOR - Harmagedon (2012, Multi-National)

affectorGreat Expectations!

Affector represents the gathering of big names and excellent musicians that bring with them qualities of their "principal" bands; a kind of progressive metal ''super-group'', which has become a sort of a trend these days (see EPYSODE, FLAMING ROW, even AYREON). Daniel Fries and Collin Leijenaar are the masterminds behind this, supported by the talent of Ted Leonard and Mike LePond, but also the guest appearances of four well-known keyboardists and a Polish symphonic orchestra - a combination which ought to succeed.
